Word Up Community Bookshop is a volunteer-run, multilingual, general-interest, nonprofit community bookshop and arts space in Washington Heights, New York City.

Our goal is to make books accessible to communities, whether that means making a bookshop in our neighborhood, getting books to events all over the city, or recirculating books to other groups. Since Word Up opened in 2011, our volunteers have recirculated over 35,000 books, both through sales in our store and by facilitating donations to nonprofits, jails, prisons, and libraries in classrooms, hospitals, and supportive housing. We’ve also hosted over 2,000 events of all kinds: readings, concerts, open mics, storytelling events for all ages, art exhibits, educational workshops, community meetings, and so much more.

In 2018 we’re launching an e-commerce site to sell books and merchandise online for the first time. If you want to support Word Up, but can’t get to our shop, this is a great way to do it! You can also donate here, as we are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization (EIN 38-3713884).

Where is your store? What are the hours?
We’d love for you to visit us! Our address is 2113 Amsterdam Avenue (at 165th St.), New York, NY 10032. Our normal hours are as follows: Mon: Closed; Tue - Fri: 3pm–9pm; Sat: 11am–6pm; Sun: 12pm–6pm. Please call 347-688-4456 to confirm we’re open for your visit, especially if it’s a long trip!
 
I just ordered some books! And a T-shirt! When can I expect my order?
Book orders ship direct from our distributor—these should be completed within a week, depending on the shipping options you chose.
 
Do you offer returns?
If you have ordered books only, information on how to make returns will be included in your delivery from Ingram. If you ordered Word Up–branded merchandise, such as tees and mugs, we’re very sorry but as a volunteer organization we don't have the capacity to facilitate returns for these items. Especially during the holidays, this would take valuable volunteer time away from running our busy Washington Heights store. If you have a question about size, please consult the size chart on each item page, or drop us an email with any questions. If you happen to live in New York City, we invite you to come into our store [hours and location linked to here] and do an exchange in person.

Do you offer expedited service and shipping?
Please drop us an email. If you live in New York City, we might be able to work something out!
 
Can I pick up my order in-store?
Right now, this isn’t possible. That said, if you’re able to do an in-store visit, just email us at orders@wordupbooks.com and we can place a hold on your desired item. Then you can come in when you like, within one week of placing your hold.
 
How can I get involved as a volunteer?
Word Up Community Bookshop is always looking for dedicated volunteers to help run our store and spread the word about our programs. Prospective volunteers can contact us at volunteer@wordupbooks.com to begin the intake process.
 
Can I host an event at Word Up Community Bookshop?
