Is there a citizenship question on the Census? ¿Hay alguna pregunta de ciudadanía en el Censo?

  • NO!!!!

How do I fill out the Census? What is the deadline? ¿Cómo completo el censo? ¿Cuál es la fecha límite?

There are 4 ways to respond/Hay cuatro formas de responder:

  • Online/En línea
  • Phone/Por teléfono
  • Mail/Por correo
  • In-person/En persona

Who will access the information in the Census? ¿Quién tendrá acceso a la información del Censo?

  • Individual records are NOT shared with anyone, including federal agencies and law enforcement entities. By law, the Census Bureau cannot share respondents' answers with anyone—not the IRS, not the FBI, not the CIA, and not with any other government agency.
  • Las respuestas individuales NO se compartirán con nadie, incluyendo las agencias federales y las entidades de la ley. Is filling out the Census legally required? ¿Se requiere legalmente completar el Censo?

  • Yes. Americans must answer the U.S. Census Bureau survey by law, although the agency hasn't prosecuted anyone since 1970.

Do you have to fill out the whole thing? ¿Tienes que completar todo?

  • Every question except the gender question must be filled out. If not, there will be follow-ups, and a Census employee may visit your home unless fully filled out. There is an option if you are experiencing homelessness.

How do I know if I am filling out the correct paper form? ¿Cómo sé que estoy completando el formulario correcto?

The Census Bureau will never ask you for:

  • Your Social Security number.
  • Money or donations.
  • Anything on behalf of a political party.
  • Your bank or credit card account numbers.
  • If someone claiming to be from the Census Bureau contacts you via email or phone and asks you for one of these things, it's a scam, and you should not cooperate. For more information, visit Avoiding Fraud and Scams.

Do I have to use my real name? ¿Tengo que usar mi nombre real?

  • It is easier for a respondent to keep track of which person they are answering for if their names are used.

What if I don’t identify as M or F? ¿Qué pasa si no me identifico como hombre o mujer?

  • You do NOT have to fill in the gender question.

  • Input where you will be sleeping on April 1st and onwards.

If there are 2 or more families living in the same household, how does it get filled out? Si hay 2 o mas familias que viven en el mismo hogar, ¿cómo se completa?

  • Each families can fill out the Census separately, and use the same address. That information will not be shared outside of the Census. Make sure that everyone in the house knows who will be filling out the Census.

  • In April, Census takers will begin visiting college students who live on campus, people living in senior centers, and others who live among large groups of people. Your housing address is your Census address. NYC centers will be counted by the administrators IN the buildings and that information will be used.

  • Everyone who lives here, no matter their status, should fill it out. There is NO question about your immigrant status.

What if I have a visitor on April 1st? ¿Qué pasa si tengo un/a visitante el 1 de abril?

  • Whether to count a visitor depends on the type of visitor. Visitors who are in your home on April 1, 2020, but who will return to their normal residence should be counted where they live and sleep most of the time. Residents of foreign countries who are visiting the United States on vacation or business on April 1, 2020, should not be counted.
  • Si contar un/a visitante depende del tipo de visitante. Lxs visitantes que estén en su hogar el 1 de abril de 2020, pero que regresarán a su residencia normal, deben contarse donde viven y duermen la mayor parte del tiempo. Los residentes de países extranjeros que visiten los Estados Unidos de vacaciones o por negocios el 1 de abril de 2020 no deben contarse.

What if I’m moving? ¿Qué pasa si me mudo?

  • People who are moving should count themselves just once, in one home. If they move into their new residence on April 1, 2020, they should count themselves at that residence. If they move out of their old residence on April 1, 2020, but have not yet moved into their new home, they should count themselves at their old residence.

  • YES -- If born before April 2, 2020.

What if I know someone who doesn’t read in any of the languages? ¿Qué sucede si conozco a alguien que no lee en ninguno de los idiomas que ofrece el Censo?

  • Census is providing content in 59 languages, including language assistance guides and videos that explain how to complete the 2020 Census questionnaire online, by phone or by mail when it becomes available in mid-March. People can respond to the Census online and by phone in 13 languages. The expansive site includes in-depth information in both English and Spanish.The NYC Census Committee has partnered with cultural groups across the city to help fill in the language gaps.
  • * Word Up will have some language packets and can print more.

Can I help someone else fill out the Census? ¿Puedo ayudar a otra persona a completar el Censo?

  • Only enumerators are allowed to help people fill out Census forms, but we are allowed to help people figure out how to fill out the forms online or mail in forms.

Can I answer the questionnaire without the code in the Invitation to Respond? 

  • Yes!  
  • Visit my2020census.gov to complete the questionnaire with or without a code.

Will my geographic area receive the paper form first or only the invitation to respond?

  • Take a look at the Mail Contact Strategies Viewer -- if your census tracts are in green then your area will receive the invitation to respond and the paper questionnaire in the first mailing. 

Remember, anyone who does not respond by phone or online will receive a paper questionnaire as part of their 4th mailing.

  • No, it has postage on the return envelope and is ready to mail.

What if more than 10 people are in my household?  

  • It is best to answer online or by phone for a larger household as you may include up to 99 people in your response.

When will I be able to see how well my community is responding?

Will the Census Bureau provide staff at my agency to help my community complete the census?  

  • The Census Bureau is staffing Census Response Representatives (CRR) mostly in areas predicted to have a low response rate from March 12 through March 30th.  After March 30th, they will deploy CRRs only in areas of low self-response for Mobile Questionnaire Assistance.
